The composition guiding principles of Songfengism were named by Chen Qigang and jointly proposed by Chen Qigang, Liang Nan and Li Mengneng in 2018. From a formal point of view, Songfengism attempts (but is not limited to) to break the barriers of musical style classification through various techniques or methods, to bridge the aesthetic gap in contemporary music history, and attempts to connect today's composition with the composition traditions of each era, with the professional experience of the artist, to re-establishes a certain connection relationship with the auditory experience of the audience. But Songfengism is not simply the pursuit of the audibility of music, nor is it the opposition and reaction of some contemporary music concepts or techniques. It transcends the binary opposition of aesthetics, emphasizes the purity, quality and perceptibility of the source of music elements, and pays attention to music creators' true soul sound that can be effectively conveyed (refer to the 2 minutes and 19 seconds of Chen Qigang"s release video in the 2024 National Center for the Performing Arts Youth Works Program), as well as the resulting aesthetic results and meaning. Songfengism can be a process or technique, or it can refer to the purpose itself.
